Is photography art?

after a interesting discussion was cut short by an overly defensive, and ignorant user on deviant art about the subject, I am still left with the question unanswered and would like some input from other, hopefully more open minded people.

So the question again is photography art, and should a photographer be regarded similarly to a fine artist?

hey thanks so much, you've got some really interesting stuff as well and I was glad to see it. Feel free to come by the studio whenever you want I'm always around especially lately, as I wait for my job to start. anyways, thanks again for all the nice comments. :)
